Lloyd Baugues
My dad, Lloyd Dean Baugues, died on Friday, April 10th.
His death was sudden and unexpected, but he's been sick a long time. He was 72 years old.
My dad married my mom, Marg, in 1976. They had two sons – my brother, Jon, and myself. We gave them four grandkids. My dad is also survived by his two brothers, Howard and Keith.
Most folks know my dad as a kind and thoughtful pastor. He served the United Methodist Church for 40 years. His longest tenures were at Union Chapel UMC and Good Shepherd UMC in Indianapolis. My parents retired to Arizona in 2014, and recently relocated with Jon's family to North Carolina.
A few years ago I wrote a living eulogy for my dad. Everything I said there was true, but it was an incomplete portrait of a complicated relationship. For all my life – including his final days – there was heavy dissonance between my dad's public perception as a pastor and our family's experience with him in private. At some point I'll write more about this. But not now.
In lieu of a public funeral we will hold a small family ceremony on a cruise this summer that was originally booked to celebrate their 50th Anniversary.
Dad received a kidney transplant in 2021 which gave him a few more years to play with his grandkids and travel the world with mom. She's requested contributions to the National Kidney Foundation in lieu of flowers.
If you'd like to pass along condolences, you can email me directly or family@baugues.com for all of us.
The two photos in this post were taken two months ago, the last time I saw him.
